Authorities urge parents to actively monitor digital consumption habits
DUBAI – Police in Dubai, through their Cybercrime Department at the General Department of Criminal Investigation, have issued a strong warning over social media videos encouraging excessive consumption of energy drinks, particularly among children.
The authority highlighted that such content is being widely circulated online and often presents dangerous behaviour as entertainment or challenge trends.
Officials stressed that many of these videos are created purely to attract views and engagement, without considering the health and behavioural consequences. Parents have been urged to stay alert to what their children are watching and to guide them away from blindly imitating harmful online trends.
Health risks
Dubai Police cautioned that excessive intake of energy drinks can lead to severe medical complications, including heart rhythm disorders, convulsions, loss of consciousness, and in extreme cases, sudden cardiac arrest.
Children are especially vulnerable, with potential effects ranging from poisoning and stomach disorders to heightened anxiety, tension, irritability, and disrupted sleep patterns.
The authority also noted risks such as impaired concentration and memory, rapid heartbeat, and high blood pressure, all of which may have lasting impacts on a child’s wellbeing.
The warning underlined that even short-term exposure to such substances in large quantities can create serious health instability.
Digital safety
Authorities emphasised the importance of relying on verified health information rather than content circulating on social media platforms. Parents and guardians were encouraged to actively monitor digital activity and educate children about the dangers of replicating viral challenges.
Dubai Police also urged the public to report any online content that promotes harmful or risky behaviour, reinforcing that community vigilance plays a key role in preventing digital harm.
To facilitate quick action, Dubai Police have made multiple reporting avenues available, including its smart app, the dedicated E-Crime platform for cybercrime complaints, and the 901 call centre. These channels are designed to allow residents to flag suspicious or dangerous digital content efficiently and securely.
The force has also developed an awareness e-platform aimed at strengthening public understanding of cyber threats and online safety practices. The platform provides educational material in both Arabic and English, covering ways to identify and avoid digital risks, and can be accessed via Dubai Police Cyber Awareness Platform. It caters to children, parents, businesses, employees, and all internet users, offering guidance on recognising harmful online behaviour while encouraging safer digital engagement across communities.
